Membership in the college is a way of reinforcing your Zen practice. For Buddhists, the community - sangha - is one of the three treasures. Participating in the activities of the college helps us to extend our meditation practice to all aspects of our lives. If you join us for Saturday meditation regularly, we hope you will become a member of the sangha.
Weekly lectures by Zen Master Gosung Shin are held each Saturday at 11:00 a.m. These lectures illuminate Zen meditation, the Buddhist scriptures and the practice of Zen in day-to-day life. Your questions are welcome. Dharma talks do not replace meditation but enhance it. The more sincerely you practice meditation, the more you will benefit from dharma instructions.
Introduction to Zen meditation and practice is held for those who are new to the American Zen College on Saturday mornings at 11: a.m. This introduction provides basic instruction in meditation, sitting and breathing techniques. Once you have attended this class, you may participate in the regular Saturday morning meditation and lecture. It is not necessary to make an appointment for the orientation, but you must be on time. Please wear loose fitting clothes. When the meditators come downstairs form the zendo at 11:00 a.m. let one of them know you have come to attend the orientation.
Saturday meditation is from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. To attend you must have attended the orientation. You may join just before any sitting period begins (9:00 a.m., 9:45 a.m. and 10:25 a.m.). Enter during walking meditation or when the meditators are returning to their cushions. Do not enter once meditation has begun.
